Film Crew Parking Along Spur Ranch Road

Dear Neighbors,

For the next week, starting tomorow (Wednesday) afternoon, there will be a TV series episode being filmed along the railroad tracks, with the setup taking place over the next several days. The actual filming is scheduled for Monday, Dec 17, with some deconstruction and cleanup for one or two days afterwards.

Traffic disruption during this period should be minimal, except on Saturday, the filming day, when roughly ten large trailer trucks will be parked along the south side of the road, just west of the RR tracks. There is light traffic on that road segment, and the film company will provide flaggers to make sure there is no traffic problem. The Santa Fe Southern train will be part of the filming, so be careful at the RR Crossing. Also, please stay away from the tracks during the filming day. I'll let you know if there's any weather disruption of the schedule.

Thank you,

Jim Garland, president

Spur Ranch Road Annual Meeting Announcement

Dear Neighbor,

The Spur Ranch Road Annual Community Meeting is Sunday afternoon, Dec. 9 at 3:00pm, at my home at 102 Spur Ranch Road (Park along the driveway.) I hope you will be able to attend, because there are several important items of business:

(1) Consideration and vote on the proposed 2019 budget. The budget (copy attached) is a significant increase from last year and reflects the need to deal with the road's increasing deterioration. The rationale for the increase will be discussed at the meeting.

(2) Vote on two director vacancies. The Board consists of five community members who serve staggered three year (renewable) terms. Two members have expiring terms and have expressed a willingness to serve again. If you are interested in becoming a board member and have questions about the duties, please email or call me at (505) 466-8833 before the meeting. Additional nominations from the floor are also welcome. Here is a brief statement from each of the two announced candidates:

Jacquie Hollister: "I would be pleased to continue to serve on the SRRA board as we work toward making sure the road remains dependable and safe. I am also interested in working toward finding a way to move from our current model of annual community contributions for maintenance to finding the resources for a more permanent upgrade and eventual government partnership."

Mary Anne Stickler: "Mary Anne Stickler is the President of Monte Alto Homes and Land, Inc. She developed the Rancho San Lucas subdivision and currently owns 6 vacant lots in that development and serves as the President of their HOA. Mary Anne originally joined the SRRA Board by appointment to fill a vacancy and was subsequently elected to a full term. She is available to run for a second term and is interested in long range planning for Spur Ranch Road while maintaining a reliable passable road in the short term."

There are three attachments to this email:(1) A new, comprehensive FAQs document to inform members about the road, which I encourage you to read. (2) A meeting agenda. (3) The 2019 proposed budget.

Please remember our Bylaws require voting members to be fully current in their dues payments. See you at the meeting!

Regards,
Jim Garland, President
Spur Ranch Road Association.

Change of date of grading

Owing to availability of the grader and the recent heavy rains grading of Spur Ranch road has been delayed two days and will commence on Thursday, 1 November; gravel rods cannot be effectively graded when they are very wet.  The grader will be clearing out the ditches along the section of Spur Ranch Road from US 285 to the Santa Fe Southern Railroad tracks.  The grader operator will also be bringing material in from the sides of the road to recreate the crown that was established some 3 years ago.  Potholes and ruts will also be filled in.

Please be extremely cautious around the grader as it grades the road; drive carefully and slowly.  In all cases, please drive according to the condition of the road – a safe and prudent speed this morning, for instance,  seems to be about 15 mph.  When there is ice or snow on the road, as on US 285 or any other icy road, please drive according to the condition of the road.

Thanks,

SRR road work upcoming

Spur Ranch Road Association membership:

Your SRRA has arranged for Spur Ranch Road to be graded and the ditches repaired starting on Tuesday of next week.

The recent rainfall, totaling some 2 inches,  and the increased level of traffic on Spur Ranch Road has created many pot holes and other damage to the road’s surface.  Spur Ranch Road is however, not slippery if driven slowly and carefully and you will not slide off the road as might have happened a number of years ago, nor will you become ‘stuck’ in the road as many drivers experienced several years ago.  You’ll appreciate that although the road surface remains solid and that that school busses, FedEx, garbage trucks and other service and emergency vehicles can continue to access your residences via Spur Ranch Road it is important that you pay attention to the road surface and drive according to changing conditions.

Thanks,

Al

Spur Ranch Road Annual Meeting Announcement

Dear Neighbor,

The Spur Ranch Road Association will hold its annual meeting this year on Sunday, November 11, at 3:00 pm, at my home at 102 Spur Ranch Road. Please make a note of this date and time  and make an effort to attend. The annual meeting is the best forum for informing yourself about the road condition and needs, and to ask questions, register complaints, and make suggestions. At the meeting, the 2019 budget will be presented to the community for approval.

This year, the annual meeting is especially important, because the road condition will necessitate a significant increase in dues, and the directors want to make certain that all residents are knowledgeable about this situation. To provide context for the ensuing discussion, I am attaching the minutes of the October 2 SRRA directors' meeting, which summarize the major issues. Please read them.

As the meeting date approaches, I will send a reminder notice, along with the Directors' recommended 2019 budget and dues. In addition, there are two directors whose terms expire this November (Jacquie Hollister and Mary Anne Stickler), so please let me know of persons you would like to nominate for these vacancies. Members will have an opportunity to vote on director nominees.

Thanks,

Spur Ranch Road Bulletin

Dear Neighbor,

Avenida Compadres is the road at the west end of Spur Ranch Road (across from Spur Ranch) that goes north to Avenida Eldorado). The poor condition of this road has been a continuing concern to us because it is the only secondary escape route for residents on the west end of our road, in the event of a fire or flooding. I'm pleased to report that, as of this week, Avenida Compadres has now been repaired and is accessible to all vehicles. This improvement is thanks to our good neighbor and developer Russ McMillan. I wish we could report that the repairs to the road will be permanent, but short sections are likely to turn into muddy ruts in the event of substantial rain. However, we encourage residents and, especially, construction vehicles to use Compadres whenever feasible, in order to reduce wear and tear on our road.

Thanks,
Jim

Tarantula Migration Season

Dear Neighbors,
This is the time of year when we're likely to see male tarantulas slowly working their way across our road in search of true love. Please take care not squash the little critters. Tarantulas may seem big and ugly (except to their lady friends), but they're really quite harmless and, besides, they can't help looking that way. So let's try to give them safe passage.
Regards,
Jim

Grading of Spur Ranch Road

Spur Ranch Road Association Members:

Your Spur Ranch Road Association Board of Directors was hoping for monsoonal activity in June that would dampen Spur Ranch Road prior to planned road maintenance and, while NOAA is predicting a good chance of slightly above average monsoonal activity for July*, the trace of rain that was received in this area was insufficient to adequately dampen the road. Your Board has determined that Spur Ranch Road cannot wait for any potential rain prior to starting road maintenance.

Starting early next week, from US 285 west to the tracks,  you will experience a grader deeply ripping the surface of the road, followed by significant watering while the road is ripped.  Following deep watering the road will be graded, shaped, crowned and, finally,  rolled to compact the surface –a  dry road cannot be adequately compacted.   From the tracks west to Compadres the road will be graded and shaped only.  While this maintenance is occurring please give the heavy equipment a wide berth – the operators will be focused on high quality road maintenance and might not see you – so please drive slowly giving the machinery operators safe and optimal clearance.

Thanks,

Al

Spur Ranch Road Grading

2 April, 2018

Spur Ranch Road will be graded on Monday, 2 April from US 285 west to the Santa Fe Southern Rail Road Tracks.  Please exercise caution and drive at slower-than-normal speeds while this road maintenance is in progress.

If you have not renewed your 2018 membership in the Spur Ranch Road Association (SRRA) please do so as soon as possible; your membership in the SRRA funds the maintenance, upgrading and repair of the road and is the only source of such funding.

Trains on the tracks

TUESDAY MARCH 13 Train Activity on the Santa Fe Southern Tracks !

From the SFSR Office:

There will be a safety meeting at 10 am in Lamy. The #93 engine will be fired up and run light up to Santa Fe to pick up the #1195. Come back down to Lamy and shuffle everything around. Best guess is that the return to Lamy with the #1195 will happen sometime between 2 and 4.

If you or someone you know regularly ‘blow through’ the stop sign at the railroad tracks,  today might be the day to rethink that.

Sadie was found!

Dear Neighbor,

At 5:05 pm,Sadie, our friend Pam's little five pound Yorkie mix, was finally found! To be more accurate, Sadie found us. She had worked her way up to Avenida Vista Grande and wandered onto Rt 285 (3+miles). Traffic stopped, Sadie ran under a car, and it took six motorists to coax her out. After going missing for eight hours, she was frightened, hungry, and dehydrated, but is now happily reunited with her mom.

Now, here's the part of this saga I find especially touching. Throughout the day, as we looked for Sadie, Carole and Pam and I kept finding community members out looking for her also. People we'd never met were on foot, on horseback, driving slowly with their emergency flashers on, combing the streets, knocking on doors, all searching for a tiny lost dog they'd never met, who belonged to a women they'd never met. I think that kind of community spirit and involvement is a special part of living here, and I am enormously grateful for everybody who pitched in. And, of course, so is Sadie. Thank you all very, very much.

Jim

Missing Dog on Spur Ranch Road

Please help us find Sadie (photo attached), a tiny five pound mixed breed, who wandered off about 9 am this morning and is most likely on SRR, near the RR track crossing, or one of the side streets. She is wearing a collar and name tag. Please email me or call Carole Garland at 505-699-5811, or Pam Kellett at 505-919-9551 if you have seen her or have any information at all. She is very small and adorable and very friendly. Thanks.

2017 SRRA Annual Meeting Minutes

Spur Ranch Road Association Annual Meeting

                                         December 10, 2017

The meeting was called to order at 3:12 pm.

Board Members present:  Jim Garland, MaryAnne Stickler, Al Webster

Ex-Officio volunteers present: Roberta Armstrong (accountant), Carole Garland (recording secretary)

 SRRA members present: 9

The first order of business was a report on road conditions presented by Al Webster. Before the SRRA was formed in 2011 the road was in much worse shape, with deep ruts and washboarding. There were concerns about community safety, since it was feared that emergency vehicles would not be able to get to homes in a timely manner. Property values were being negatively impacted, since realtors were reluctant to show homes due to the poor road condition.  The road is currently serviceable and safe, though further improvements are desirable. Members expressed concerns about the level of dust and the fact that grading provides only a very temporary improvement.  We discussed methods of dust control and Ron Billingsley suggested that there is too much loose gravel on the road and excess should be removed. The source of wear on the road is the increasing number of cars and the high speed at which they travel.  The possibility of installing speed bumps and/or stop signs at Silver Saddle was discussed and referred back to the board for investigation.

We discussed weed control. This past year we did not spray Russian Thistle with Roundup and will evaluate if this lack of spraying led to a greater weed infestation. If we decide to spray next year, we will use an 18% vinegar solution to spot-spray noxious weeds to see if this method wo

Roberta Armstrong  reported on expenditures in 2017 and then the proposed budget for 2018 was presented to the group. There will be no increase in dues next year. One budget item was amended: the category "road improvements" was merged with "flood damage and emergencies." After discussion, Roberta Armstrong moved that the 2018 budget be approved and Mary Anne Stickler seconded that motion. The budget was approved unanimously. (The 2018 budget was the same as the 2017 budget, except for a $100 reduction in the signage/weed control/misc category.)

The annual dues statement should be sent out to all residents before year's end.

As an action item, Glenn Edens (Rancho San Lucas) suggested that the Board solicit bids for directors' liability insurance, in hopes of reducing the annual premiums. There was general agreement this was a good idea.

The last item of business was to elect officers. We note with regret that board member Henry McCormick resigned from the board for reasons of health and we thank him for his service. Two of our board members, Mary Ann Stickler and Jacquie Hollister, are not up for re-election this year. So we needed to elect three more board members. Al Webster and Jim Garland agreed to run for another term and John Holton also agreed to be nominated. There were no additional nominations from the floor. The three nominees spoke briefly about why they would like to serve and then Roberta Armstrong moved that they be approved by acclamation. Mary Anne Stickler seconded the motion and the nominees were elected unanimously.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:20 pm.

After the meeting, the directors elected Jim Garland, president; Al Webster, treasurer, John Holton, vice president.

 Respectfully submitted, Carole Garland, Secretary
